Let me tell y’all this up and down battle between Google Panda, Google Penguin, Algorithm updates, and the like has affected low level blogs and even top blogs such as Traffic Generation Cafe. I honestly agree with Lisa Irby that the days of depending on Google traffic are becoming short and few. Not knocking Google at all, but it’s really hard to say what works well with Google and what doesn’t. In any case, it’s best prepare for a huge set of storms before we all are struggling up a creek without a paddle.
The most recent change in Google for me personally is my Great Cocktail Recipes site. It got to a point where I was getting nearly 2000 views a day. Now, I’m barely pulling 175-400 daily. Still, it’s actually pretty decent traffic considering the fact I’ve had the site up for less than a year. Here are a few ways I think I can compensate for all this loss of traffic.
Even creating a viral video where I just show pictures and give written directions will actually help me to build my traffic and earn a little bit of income which is better than nothing. The advantage is that YouTube has a great share button that I can use on a number of sites I’ve talked about such as Tumblr, StumbleUpon, Digg, Pinterest, Twitter, Facebook, etc. I really think this will be the better Google alternative for search results. Even though, YouTube is owned by Google, YouTube definitely has its own type of SEO.

That automatically says something right there. Seeing as this particular site is more picture and image based, it will definitely help to get more acquainted with social sites that have the same kind of power. Knowing your audience is half the battle and I think when you start to do that, you won’t need Google search as much. Yes, Google is the most powerful search engine, but you don’t have to solely play Google’s game to succeed, you know?
Between the exact domain and the page layout (ads over the fold), these are two of the dominant algorithm updates as of late. For a more thorough knowledge of all the updates, check out SEOMoz as they have outlined everything from the start.
The best thing to do in this situation is to really build your own community, get some great guest posts out, develop a great rapport for social media and get that interactivity going. There is no telling what will happen next on Google, but it’s just important to be prepared for anything!
