I’m getting around to this kind of late, but this is a definite food for thought kind of topic. What’s the worst social media sin? Now, this topic is inspired by a LinkedIn post that’s steadily getting replies. What types of things in the social media world are taboo? What kinds of things should you NOT do? What ways should you post, engage your people, etc? Even, I’m still getting the hang of this, but here are a few posts that I found rather intriguing:
“The biggest sin is simply posting a sales message on other peoples walls without permission.” – Andy Phillips
“Spamming especially on Twitter..sending links to people through DM or Tweets to their name without there permission or not even building some kind of business relationship with them will result in an immediate unfollow or even worse. I’ve seen this too many times when people try to over-promote. It’s best to just tweet several times a day from your own account, and if people genuinely like your content, they’ll retweet.” – John Knowles
“Biggest mistake is thinking that Social is just another marketing effort. Social is unique in that we are relying on the people. We are putting content in play so that people take, make it their own, add their narrative and increase the value of that content so their friends join in. We are increasing purchase intent, motivating people to buy during that moment of decision. But the biggest mistake is still using a campaign mentality. Coming up with the big tactic and going from tactic to tactic, campaign to campaign without focusing on the parts that connect people with your brand over time.” – Tom Troja
Whether you are looking to dominate Facebook, Twitter, Google+, LinkedIn or any other social network, it’s very imperative to find the right kinds of reasons. Otherwise, you’ll be lost in the sauce, and your campaign will prove very weak.
