Making Money 2 Blog

3 ways Superbowl XLVII helped me make extra income using Google Adsense

Posted on February 05, 2013 by John K

I thought this would be a fun post and it definitely is a much better start than my month of January. I did a small comparison of my earnings between last January and the past month. I made $11.15 back in January 2012 and I made $18.60 in January 2013. As you can see that’s well over a 60% increase in earnings. One because I have more blogs, I’ve found good places to hold my Adsense, and I’m a lot more aware of what works and what does not work on certain pages. Now, this bring me to the hypothesis of why I think I did EXCEEDINGLY better this year for Superbowl Sunday. Let’s break down the logistics, shall we?

Advertising on steroids

Now, February is usually a month of spending for two reasons: the Superbowl and Valentine’s Day. Now, despite the little snafu regarding the lights at the SuperDome. I found out that an ad of the Superbowl costs up to $4 million. However, there were over 108 million Americans that tuned into the game. Now, when it comes to the Superbowl, gluttony is your best friend! You want your favorite snacks, you want your favorite beers/spirits, etc. This I believe is the key on how I did a lot better!

Catering to the needs

As some of you know, I maintain a cocktail blog (specific/highlighted links will be provided in a bit). Now, last year I only made 8 cents that day in 2012, but that figure jumped up to $1.76 with little to no blogging. Why? Well, that’s a bit complicated but I think I have a good indication. One, I update with FRESH content at least once or twice a day, which means 9 out of 10 that my particular search results will supersede everyone else’s site ESPECIALLY in the case of those higher blogs which search results are no longer relevant because they did things the old way. However, there are always exceptions to the rules. Not only do I have content that’s fresh, BUT RELEVANT! That’s the key! I have posted recipes for Parties and specifically a killer Blue Bulldog Margarita from last year’s Superbowl. I revitalized this by using Pinterest and doing a bit of updated SEO work so that it could get the attention it deserves. Now, today, I have posted up a grand Jungle Juice recipe that was created by the Tipsy Bartender for a Superbowl party.

Instagram/Pinterest/Twitter/Tumblr updates with Memes

I saw a rather hilarious Meme on the SuperDome Superbowl Black out Situation (shoutout to the Ravens for still taking the victory!) and decided to spread it virally through Pinterest, Instagram, Tumblr, and my blog, naturally. Let’s just say a funny yet very relative topic at the time was great for spreading stuff virally. Spreading funny content that’s right to the point and right to where you want it to be is something that’s extremely great and people will share it just because they enjoy it! A picture does really tell 1,000 words.

With all of these different variables and of course, the right amount of traffic and display ads showing, that’s why I believe I did so much better significantly not only in comparison to last year’s Superbowl but this year’s start of February! Check below for some of the Superbowl commercials.
